Hello all,

I use the  INA145 Programmable Gain Dfference Amplifier. Can someone please explain to me:

1. What is exactly the difference between single and dual supply ? 

2. My voltage inputs are switching all the time. So I want amplify once a positive once a negative voltage, is this possible with single suppply?  Do I need a negative supply voltage to get negative output voltage?

    Hello Yue,

    Strictly speaking there really is no difference between "single supply" and "dual supply" because single supply refers to a dual supply configuration where the VEE supply  is connected to the circuit's ground. 

    Conventional amplifiers can only produce output voltages that fall in-between their power supply voltages without additional external circuitry. Therefore if you powered a device on +10V and connected the V- supply to ground, the amplifier realistically would only be able to produce output voltages in a range from close to 0/ground to close to +10V.

    Therefore, in order to properly produce negative voltages at the output of the amplifier in a DC coupled system, you will need a negative supply.
