Solar powered battery charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24040, BQ24450, BQ25040, BQ24072, BQ25050, BQ24153, BQ24650

I'm going to make solar powered battery charger. I have never did something like that. I haven't decided yet finally to use lead-acid gel or LiIon battery. I'm just watching your chips BQ24040 and BQ24450, and I would be greathful if you colud give me some tips. Thanks.

  • According to the solar panel's Power-V curve,  we can find the maximum power point. The solar panel operates at that voltage, it will has maximum power. Each solar cell's maximum power voltage is very low. So, several solar cells in series make the maximum power voltage fit charger IC's operating voltage.

The charger IC need input votlage regulation function to keep input voltage constant. So that, charger gets the maximum output power of solar panels. We call it input voltage base DPM (Dynamic Power Management) function which automatically change charging current to keep input voltage constant.

      bq24072/3/4/5; bq24040/50; bq25040;  bq25050/60; bq24153/6/8/9 have input voltage base DPM. bq25050/60; bq24153/6/8/9 will be released soon.

  • Hi,

I need to a select a solar panel to recharge the Li Ion Battery(1020mA 3.7V 3.8wh).

To recharge this what should be the solar panel’s Voltage range ,current range  and power range..?

Generally how to select  the solar panel..?

Kindly suggest some solar panels also. Does TI support any solar panel..?

    Regards

  • Hi all.   I'm on the same as Beastrider.. I want to build a charger that will regulate and manage lead acid gel high discharge batteries..I'm looking at a 12v  45watt 3 panel solar unit...  I'm going to be a bit cheeky here and ask if TI already has a schematic draw up for a charger along those lines ...Even if someone may know where there may be plans already that would be a great help..Cheers     Mike

  • good news, bq24650 will be released to support solar charger by end of  this July.

here are a few key FEATURES:
    • Maximum Power Tracking Capability by Input Voltage Regulation

    • 5V-28V Input Solar Panel

    • Resistor Programmable Float Voltage Accommodates Li-Ion/Polymer, LiFePO4, SLA, NiMH/NiCd Chemistries

    • 600kHz NMOS-NMOS Synchronous Buck Converter

  • Hi,

I have just checked the bq24650 site but it states that it supports  Li-Ion/Polymer, LiFePO4, Lead Acid Chemistries but not NiMH..... As I am now also finding some IC I could use to transform the 3W (6) solar panel to charge 1  to 5 NiMH Batteries with MPPT function. I wonder that whether bq34650 is capable for this kind of battery as the charging algorithm may be different. Also, when will it release to sell/call samples?  Thanks very much,

  • bq24650 has been released. To charge battery chemistry other than Li-Ion/Polymer,  external components are required to fit different charge algorithm. The apps notes will be published soon.
