TPS54618EVM-606 Problems

Hello,

I bought a TPS54618EVM-606 Evaluation Kit. I changed the resistor R9 to 33kOhm and R10 to 10kOhm to get a output voltage of about 3.3V.

When I now power up the DC/DC I only get about 2.4V and the VSNS is about 0.5V (not 0.799V). The PowerGood Output is high (that means everything is OK).

At the first try I started the kit without a load. Can this damage the chip?

I checked the resistor values double and triple and I also checked there are shortcuts or something else. But everything looks good.

Have anybody some hint for me?

  • It is possible you have damaged the IC.  Sometimes excessive heat can damage the internal reference (it is difficult to control the temperature when hand soldering).  Since you see 0.5 V on VSENSE, that is probably the case.  You should try replacing the IC.

  • Thanks John! Then I think I can throw the kit awa, but I didn't heat up the kit very much... 

    I have not the equipment in the laboratory to replace a chip with a PowerPad...

    I think such a kit should be better designed for replacing resistors or capacitors. Thats the job of a evaluation kit....

  • It is somewhat unusual for damage to occur.  I hand solder on EVMs often to make modifications without any issue, but I have heard of it happening with that family of devices.  The layout is designed for a number of purposes.  It typically shows compactness of design and typical layout rather than spreading components out for easy modification.  In that sense it is more of a "marketing" tool than an easily modified board.  Can you tell me a little about your application and potential volumes?  i may be able to get you a pre-modified board.

    I just bought a new kit. I hope this will work better.

    But it's funny: Even with a damaged IC the kit works fine. I only have to replace the reference voltages in the formulas by my new 0,5V! :)
