Extending the battery cycle life and improving battery safety by charging lower battery voltage or use new LiFePO4 battery

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24105, BQ24083, BQ24620, BQ24040

Battery cycle life and safety are very critical for battery powered equipment. Many people ask how to improve the battery cycle life and safety? When the Li-Ion battery is over-charged to 4.3V under 175C for LiCoO2 cathode Li-Ion battery, the battery will be run into thermal run-away mode and may explode the battery. Over-charging the battery will also significantly reduce the battery cycle life. The new JEITA specifications are clearly specified to have different battery voltages and currents under temperatures for improving the safety. In addition, LiFePO4 battery has been developed and commericilized to improve the battery safety and cycle life. The bq24105 can program the charge voltage for charging LiFePO4 battery while bq24083 can charge the Li-Ion battery to 4.1V for improving the battery safety and extending the cycle life. Do you have challenges with LiFePO4 battery, extending the cycle life and share your experiences?
