BQ3055

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ3055, BQ3060

Hi,

For the BQ3055 battery management part, are external cell balancing FET required as our charge current will be 1C for the 1.6A 4Cell battery and discharge current of 4A, since the internal cell balancing FET takes care of only 10mA of current.

Is there any formula or tools available to design the battery management BQ3055 like for pin name "TEST" in the chip. Datasheet recommends a value of 2K OHM to VSS but in "User Guide" document it is pulled down to 10K value. Also for the series resistor connected to the FUSE pin

I have seen applications where internal cell balancing is used under these conditions, but it may take more than one cycle to balance the cells. The datasheet provides information on implementing external cell balancing, if needed.

The test pin is used during manufacturing testing and it is not used be the customer. You should place a 2 kohm pull-down resistor to VSS per the datasheet.

You find some guidance on the fuse circuit in the bq3060 Gas Gauge Circuit Design Applications Report (SLUA507).

    Regards
    Tom

  • Hi Tom,

In a 4-cell series combination with external mosfet, one of the cell seems to drain off quickly when unused ie. ideal condition (not charged or connected to load).

Is there any chance of leakage through BQ3055 or external mosfets?
