bq78pl114 with bq76pl102 industrial calibration without bqwizard

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL114, BQWIZARD, BQ76PL102

Hellow,

the data sheet of the bq78pl114 refers always to calibrated devices if terms related to accuracy. So calibration is demanded.

How is it possible to calibrate the bq78pl114 with bq76pl102 in an industrial manner without the need of artisan bqwizard usage?

Can we for example produce the calibration file by supplying 2800mV, reading all voltage readings, supply 4200mV, reading all readings again, calculate a little and write the results to the calibration file and this file into the bq78pl114?

Or is it possible via SMBus? There we need the registers and calculation etc.

Or other or more simple solution?

Best regards

Andreas

  • bq78PL114 and bq76PL102 are shipped with their cell voltage measurement circuitry calibrated.  No voltage calibration is required.  Temperature and current calibration is required because these depend on external components, like diodes, resistors and PCB.

Software tools and documentation including an API, Extended SBData Commands App Note and others will be forthcoming to allow for custom interface to bq78PL114.

  • Dear Jim,

Thank you for your fast answer.

i just took a new pcb into operation. I pushed the 76PL102 calibration into the 78PL114 (not 78PL114) using the "calibration transfer bit" and a calibration/relearn sequence. The result was obvious, the cell 5 voltage is nearly exact.

Reading of cell 5 shows 10...15mV offset

Reading of cells 1...4 show more offset, of the shelf calibration is not sufficient and does not match well.

Temperature has to be calibrated, we do not use the exact diodes

Current has to be calibrated, due to shunt resistor tolerances and reading errors

Untill now i observed never a precise voltage reading of all cells without calibration. Temperature calibration is not an option, its a must and current calibration should be done for good performance

We already have the first prototyping batch of assembled pcbs waiting for calibration and the assembler already is waiting for calibrated pcbs. Battery pack assembly is in Europe, manual calibration is not the way.

We like to start production with this battery pack assembler. We have to automate this process in a serious manner.

Is it possible to give a forecast of the release of API, Extended SBData commands etc?

    Best regards

    Andreas

  • API software is one to two months.

Extended SBS Commands App Note is one to two weeks from web page release.

  • Thank you Jim, that will help!

    Best regards

  • Jim,

Any developments re API release and extended SBS command App Note?  I searched the TI documentation for the App Note, but no joy.  A link would be helpful.

    Thanks, David
