TPS63002 easily damage

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63002, TPS63001, TPS63000

Hi All,

[Problem]

TPS63002 usually damage in mixed 3.3 and 5.0 circuit. Our design include Graphics LCD module supply by TPS63002 (5.0 volt) and 3.3V MCU (5.0 tolerance I/O) supply by TPS63001 (3.3 volt). VINA, EN and PS/SYNC of TPS63002 is connected to a MCU's GPIO for control ON/OFF by software. Once power on everything work fine for a few minutes then current flow higher and higher until it damage.

[Steps Needed to Recreate Problem]

Power on and wait for a few minute and/or power cycle for many times

Please see attachment for our design block diagram.

What's mistake?, please advise.

Thanks in advance,

Suriyan

  • Hello, it seems that you have the same problem has us,

We are also using a TPS63002 to generate 5Volts from 2 'AA' batteries. Some chips consume a lot of current ( more than 450mA under 3volts! and generate only 1.8Volts )  but others don't.

Have you solved your problem and/or what are solution have you taken ?

Is there an hardware  problem in this chip ?

By the way, we are using the SP/SYNC pin to control power consumption of this chip and at startup the pin is LOW is that a problem ?

    Thanks for your feedback,

    François

  • Your block diagram looks fine.  Most likely, this is a layout related issue where the part is over stressed and absolute maximum ratings are exceeded.  This is why the parts break after repetitive use--the electrical overstress wears down the IC until it breaks.  Could you post your schematic and layout?

I also recommend ordering the EVM for the TPS63000 and testing that in your circuit.  If it works fine, then the problem is either your component selection or board layout.
