bq20z90EVM-001 Schematic question

Hello,

I am developing a fuel gauge circuit based on the bq20z90EVM-001 module. There is a symbol in the schematic that I have not run across before and I would like to know what it stands for. The schematic can be found in the following file,

on page 8.

The symbols are two arrows pointing toward each other. They are labeled G1,G3,G5 and G6. I don't believe these represent any type of part or connection, perhaps it has something to do with the pcb layout?

    I found that these symbols translate to pads similar to the arrows on the pcb. Perhaps they are used to short these connections to ground by the user for development purposes.

    These are the so-called 'spark gaps'. They are used for ESD protection purpose. They are effective in lowering the peak voltage during an ESD event by breakdown of the air gap between the two tips and discharging the energy. Some customers do not prefer this method as they are concerned of fire if the battery cell may produce some hydrogen, especially if the cells are in a sealed case.
