drive led strips with TLC59116

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59116, TLC59116F

Dear

I would like to use the TLC59116 IC to control some led strips (12V/1A).
The problem is there will be more than 120mA current per channel.
I was thinking about fet's at the output of the chip (see image in attachment). But is this possible?
Are there better options to drive approximately 1A of current per channel?

Yours sincerely

  • Matthijs,

The concept you show will work.  Just note that the TLC59116 output pulls low to generate a constant current.  It will not drive high, so a pull-up would be required.  As an alternative, you could consider the TLC59116F which is simply an open drain output (not constant current).  Since it's not constant current, it would probably be a better option for this implementation.

Another option would be combining outputs to create 1A. You can tie multiple outputs together and since they are all sinking the same current you can divide the required output current by the number of outputs driving to determine the correct REXT.  The advantage of the method you propose is the power dissipation is external to the controlling IC.
