Sometimes no charging operation in BQ24610.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610, BQ29412, BQ29312

Dear Team,

We have got an opportunity of BQ24610 and other BMS parts from Simens.

Please refer to below business status.

- customer : Siemens

- part no : BQ24610 (Battery charger IC)

           Battery pack side: BQ29312,BQ2084,BQ29412

- Application : potable ultrasonic waves

- MP : Mar/2013y

- Q’ty : 10k/m

They have got an issue which is sometimes no charging operation.

When they produced 30EA applications, some products are not charging the battery intermittently.

Please refer to below experiment status.

1. input and output specification: Vin:19Vdc, Vout(bat: 4EA):16.8V/3A

2. abnormal status(no charging) :

 1) When DC input pulgs in the application W/O batteries, the Battery charger FET is operated very well.

 2) When Batteries pulg in the application, sometimes the Battery charger FET switching is abnormal like a OCP.

The phenomenon is occurred intermittently.

Please refer to attachments.

If you need more information or waveforms, please reply it to me.

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Tae Ho

  • What is the battery voltage prior to plugging into the charger?  If this is close to 16V, see what happens if the battery is close to 14V. Is this a real battery or electronic load?  Use a real battery pack.

    Set the input current limit a little higher and see is that helps.

    Please lift the inductor and insert a loop of wire for a current probe and capture the current waveform.

  • Hello Charles,

    Please refer to below response.

    What is the battery voltage prior to plugging into the charger?

    =>the battery voltage is 16V.

    Is this a real battery or electronic load?  Use a real battery pack.

    => They already reviewed with a real battery pack.

    Set the input current limit a little higher and see is that helps.

    => After modifying Input current limit a little higher, no improvement.

    Please lift the inductor and insert a loop of wire for a current probe and capture the current waveform.

    => Please refer to below waveforms which are included Ch1(Switching waveform) and Ch3(inductor current waveform).

    Output is not shorted. However, the waveforms look like a hiccup operation.

    <Inductor current>

    <Inductor current02_extended>

    If you have got any ideas or solutions, please share it with me.

    Thank you.
