bq24630 as UPS power path switch

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24630

Hi,

I'm designing an uninterruptible power supply with 4x LiFePO4 cells and bq24630 as the battery charger.

My systems runs on 24V and so, there will be a step-up circuit/block to boost the battery voltage to 24V.

As the bq24630 has an power selector feature, I'm planning to use bq24630's BATDRV signal + P-ch MOSFET (BATFET) to switch the power from the output of the boost stage to the system power (instead of directly from the battery) when the ACPWR is down.

Thus, I wonder if there are any recommendations or comments to this type of application/configuration for bq24630. As, for instance, if this is valid application and if there are any any special considerations about how to feed the bq24630's VCC pin.

Many thanks and regards,

Gustav

  • The power path charger is designed to keep the system powered, so if the input adapter is removed, the battery is switching in.

If one inserts a  boost converter at the system charger connection and puts the system load on the output of the boost converter, it should work fine.

If the design is to use the adapter (assuming it is 24V) and run it to the system load and connect the BAT FET between the battery and the input of the boost charger and the output of the boost charger to the system, this should also work for the typical boost charger (assuming there is no reverse charge connection from the adapter to the battery via the boost charger).

  • Thank you very much for the prompt response.
