BQ25504 interfaced with 0.5V - 0.7Wp solar cell

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25504

I'm engaged with the design stage of a standalone device powered by a solar cell and a battery. Due to technical and energetic reasons, I have to use a 0.7Wp single cell (no load voltage is about 0.55V at 25°C). In any way, the cell will never work at its peak power: the maximum power produced by the solar cell will never exceed more than 600 mW.

I would like to use the BQ25504 integrated circuit because it has all the features I need, but its power stage is "limited" to a peak power of 400 mW.

Is it possible to reply the power stage of BQ25504 with discrete low on resistance MOSFETs - driven by using BQ25504 terminals like LBST, VSTOR, VBAT - in order to improve current capability of the power stage?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

  • None of the outputs are gate drivers to build an external boost power stage so you cannot do what you propose.

You will not damage the bq25504 by placing a solar cell with higher than 400mV output power.   But you will not get the maximum possible power out of the cell.  Realistically, though, how often will you have enough light to get maximum power?
