Using bq20Z65 with non Li-ion chemistries

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ29312A, BQ20Z65-R1, BQ20Z65

Hi,

I am working on a BMS design for a primary battery that uses a chemistry other than Li-ion.  I would like to use the bq20Z65-R1 in this design as it offers many features in a single chip that I require (impedance track SOC, protection, and SHA-1).  Looking at the datasheet, it appears that I could configure the part to track SOC correctly by loading in a custom derived set of tables and parameters.  Is this correct or do I need to consider the two chip solution of the bq20Z80A and bq29312A?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mark

The bq20z65 is very good choice for most applications. Can you let us know which battery will be used, so that we can confirm?

  • Hi Tom,.

We are using a modified Li/CFx chemistry.  If we follow the procedure in the app note for determining the curves, do you think part this will work? Since we can't run the charging part of the testing, I assume we just stuff our fully charged capacity for the cell into the device.  Is this correct?

  • Mark,

The device should work with Li/CFx cells, but we do not have any ChemID's setup for this chemistry. You will need to send cells to TI for characterization. Please provide an email address or register a biography on the forum and I will send the information required to have these cells characterized.

  • Hi Tom,

That's  good news.  Is it possible for us to do the characterization or must this be done by TI?

We are still some time away from getting the cells made.  So, I can't supply them yet.  However, I plan to proceed with my circuit design on the assumption that we will eventually get this done.  Since I am doing the design as a subcontractor for the battery manufacturer, I think it best if I have them contact you to set this up.  Can you provide me with some contact info via email? I'll have them contact you directly.
