LMZ12010 maximum soldering temperature?

Hi everyone,

We tried to solder the LMZ12010 Simple Switcher by hand, but afterwards, we found that the VOUT and AGND pins were shorted inside the IC. We think this is because we made lots of mistakes in soldering, damaging the internal components (coil of the inductor, maybe?) by repeated heating and cooling.

What is the maximum storage/soldering temperature of the LMZ12010? We plan to solder again this week using a solder paste that melts at 138°C 281°F and a reflow skillet. I saw that the datasheet says 125 C for operating and 165 C to activate the thermal shutdown feature.

  • Hi Kevin,

    The IC case temperature for solder reflow is 245 degree C peak for 30 second. Attached document include more information about soldering for your reference. Make sure to solder the exposed pad at the back of the IC to the PCB copper GND plane. Refer to the  "Power Dissipation and Board Thermal Requirments" section in the datasheet for greater detail on how to extract the heat from the IC junction to the PCB copper.

    Maybe you could update the data sheet to remove "easy hand soldering"
