EVM module for High discharge current Li-Po

Hi, I am using a bq20z655EVM for my project now. I need to predict SOC of a Li-Po pack. Problems is my consuming device will drain 6.5 amps continuous and at least 10 amps pulse from the pack. However, the bq20z655EVM only can handle 7 amps max discharge current according to the datasheet. So can I do anything to adjust it? Or can you guys recommend any other EVM module which can handle high discharge current?

The device EVMs were designed for evaluation of mid range current applications. Your requirements are not that far above the limit, so our EVMs may have enough margin to allow you to test your operating conditions. You will probably need to design a higher performance PCB and perhaps even use higher power FETs for very high current applications.

  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. Problem is within this project, I do not have time to develop a whole new PCB for TI's IC therefore I want to purchase a EVM module with fuel gauge ability. I also attach the graph of current drawn by my device so you may have a look. There is an inrush current at the beginning for about 300ms so I dont think it is gonna be a problem but the continuous current drain is about 8A and I couldnt find any EVM board which could handle it. Only some Li-ion protection solution board has higher max current but then they do not have fuel gauge ability. Do you know if any EVM board from TI fit my requirements?

Or can I just try to change the FETs on my bq20z655EVM board with a more power one?

    Looking forward for you advices.

    Best regards,

    Hieu
