TLC59116 and REXT behavior

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC59116, TLC59116F

Good day,

We are building a device with the TLC59116 running 13 LEDs - 4 RGB and one White/Amber. We have an issue where not all of the LEDs light up and some flicker at times. We have traced the connections and they look good. While testing we found that changing values on the REXT line did not appear to have any effect. Worse, when we measure that pin it is putting out no voltage. Is this to be expected?

We have read through the IREF section of the documentation, but it is not exactly obvious what the default behavior is. We are not doing anything specific with that register. Do we need to enable something to make the REXT active?

Thank you,

Tyler Wilson

  • To answer our own question, it turns out we were using the TLC59116F version of the part, which does not include any of the current-limiting functionality. Let this be a warning to others - watch those part numbers very carefully. :-|
