the bq24160 questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24160

Dear all,

About Bq24160, I have two questions need your help.

1. If both IN and USB is plug in , which source will be selected by the charge IC?

2. In our project, use a 3A adapter to connect IN pin, why the charge current still very low ,nearly about 550mA.I want to know which configuration can result in situation.

Thanks!

  • The input pin with PRECEDENCE will be used.  In host mode, the user can set the precedence using bit 3 of memory location 0.  In DEFAULT mode, IN has precedence.

The charger reduces charge current below the value set in the registers if:

    1.  the IC thinks the battery is close to full charge by the I2C battery regulation voltage registers

    2.  the input voltage as sensed at the IC's input pins droops down to the VIN-DPM threshold as set by the I2C VINDPM registers

    3.  the voltage on TS pin is sensing COOL

    4.  the IC itself is too hot

    5.  the input current limit setting is too low for the desired charge current

    6.  the SYS output + BAT output is demanding more power the input source can provide.

  • Dear sir,

If both USB and IN is connected, the IN with PRECEDENCE will be used. My question is at this time, If I remove the VIN input, the charge IC can switch automaticlly to USB,and regulate the current to 1.5A , is it right?

    Thanks!

  • Yes. as long as the USB was not previously locked out during bad source detect.

  • Dear sir,

I have another question need consult with you, In our software, we configured the Ichg 2.5A when VIN is connected, then we use a 5V output power supply to test.

When the power cable from the power supply to the VIN is short (about 10cm) , the current that observed on the power supply is about 2.2A.

When the power cable from the power supply to the VIN is longer (about 50cm), the current that observed on the power supply is about 1.6A

My question is why they have so big difference,  I don't think the longer cable has very large resistance.

    Thanks

  • What is the voltage measured at the IC or at least at the closest input capacitor?  You must be dropping voltage across the longer cable, causing the input voltage to the IC to droop and therefore activating the VINDPM circuit.
