LM317 VOUT pin

Hi,

I have previously used the LM317 TO-92 Plastic package and am pleased with the results. I would however prefer to use a surface mount equivalent to save space on my final PCB. As far as I can see, the smallest package available is the SOT-223 (EMP). This part has 2 Vout pins (1 sandwiched between Vin and ADJ, and a second longer tab on the other edge). I wanted to double check: is there a difference between the two pins, and which one should I use?

The OUTPUT at the tab (Pin 4) is the same as the OUTPUT at Pin 2.

Typically, these two pins are connected together under the package, but you can use either one.

I have a similar question..

In the datasheet of LM1084, the TO-263 version has a pin called Output and another called Vout.

Are they the same too?

Yes, the same.

It is a disconnect in terminology, and these descriptors are used interchangeably in seeming random patterns within documents.

Technically, the pin name should be "OUT", the voltage that appears on this pin would be "Vout", and current from this pin would be "Iout"
