BQ24072 - low battery behaviour

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24072

May I ask about the expected behaviour of BQ24072 when VIN is disconnected and so the BQ24072 is providing power from the connected battery?

What happens when the battery voltage drops below a certain useful level... for example lets say the upstream circuit requires minimum 3.3v

Can the BQ24072 be "configured" to shutdown when the battery voltage falls below a certain threshold (such as 3.3v)? Or will the BQ24072 keep providing power from the attached battery until it is perhaps damaged as it reaches ~zero volts? In this case, even if the upstream circuit has some low-voltage shutdown/protection, will the BQ24072 itself continue to load the battery to any extent that might (over time) cause damage to the battery?

  • With no input attached, the bq24072 with connect BAT to OUT until either the battery's own internal protector opens (usually between 2.5V - 2.9V) or the battery voltage drops below the voltage necessary to power the gate of the BATFET (between 2.0V-2.5V).

  • Thank you Jeff.

The battery datasheet does mention a 2.75v cut off, but I don't like to assume the translation of the datasheet perfectly matches my interpretation! That might be internally automatic, or it might be expected of the user.

Your BATFET detail is great though, because now I can test the cells and be sure of the lower limit, and the behaviour of the bq24072 if/as it reaches ~2.5v

    Very happy :)
