Set bq27541 into HDQ mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27541, BQEVSW, EV2400, BQ27541-V200

Hi all,

We are using the BQ27541 (BQ27541DRZR-V200) fuel gauge device for a battery pack.

It's currently set in I2C mode (as per factory default), and we would like to change it to
HDQ/single-wire mode. I haven't been able to find out what is the process for
doing this. There are various application notes which talk about
a USB EVM, and some TI software which allows you to program the
device, however we do not have this EVM device.

What are the I2C commands necessary to set the device into HDQ mode ?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Unfortunately, there are no verbatim I2C commands available for setting the device in HDQ mode. The device can only be placed in HDQ mode by using the EV2300 (or EV2400 for Windows 7) and the associated PC-based software (downloadable under bqEVSW software: http://www.ti.com/tool/bq27541evm). After opening the EVSW, find the tab "Send HDQ" and convert communications from I2C to HDQ. Please contact me offline (m-lu@ti.com) if you need an EV2300 adaptor to set the mode between PC and device.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

we plan to use the bq27541-V200 in HDQ mode. Do we need to have access to the I2C Pins to set the part to HDQ mode? It will be placed on a very small PCB, so it is very difficult to get access to the I2C Pins. Or can we set the HDQ mode before assembling the PCB? What hardware do we need to switch the mode?

    Frank

  • Hello Frank,

You can use bqEVSW with EV2300 or EV2400 to convert the bq27541-V200 into HDQ mode. As Michael said, once in this mode, you cannot revert back to I2C. You will need access initially to the I2C pins in order to get the device into HDQ mode. You will need to set the HDQ mode before assembling the PCB. No special hardware is needed.

  • Hi Michael,

We are using the bq27742 in HDQ mode. We are using a custom programming tool to program and calibrate our PCBAs (no TI tools). There must be a sequence of I2C commands to put the gauge into HDQ mode. Can you please share this?

Is this command sequence the same for bq27741 and bq27541?

I've also heard there is a plan to release FW that will enable transition back to I2C mode. Is this true?

    Thanks,
    Jason
