Use Wireless Power for Data transmission

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51011

Hey there,

is it possible to use the wireless power technology to transmit user data?

I think about an application like this:

After the wireless power connection is established and power is transfered from the transmitter to the receiver,

the connection can be used to transmit data. For example the user can sent data via IC² to the transmitter, the transmitter

sends it to the receiver and from there it can be sent to another microcontroller via IC².

Are there Parts avalible at this time which can be used like that?

Thanks for your answers.

  • Hello Sven,

It has already been done.  Take a look at any of the data sheets for the Integrated Wireless Power Receivers or Transmitters.  For example, the BQ51011 http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruhj1/spruhj1.pdf.

    On page 14...

The communication is digital - packets are transferred from the receiver to the transmitter. Differential Bi-phase encoding is used for the packets. The bit rate is 2-kbps.

    Thanks,

  • Hello greenja,

as far as I know the transmitter and the receiver can communicate in this way:

The receiver can send a message to the transmitter by changing the load seen by the transmitter.

On page 15 is written: The communication is digital - packets are transferred from the receiver to the transmitter.

Thereby the receiver can tell the transmitter how much power he need´s or if there is an error.

This explains the direction of the Communication arrow in figure 24 on page 14 in http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq51011.pdf

If it is possible for the transmitter to send a message to the receiver, I think the arrow has to point in both directions.

I was looking for something like a register in a microcontroller. In this register I want to write the information

which should be transfered from the transmitter to the receiver or vice versa. After the transmission is complete

the information is retrievable in another register in the receiver (if the information was sent from the transmitter).

    Thanks

  • Perhaps I was mistaken in my interpretation of what communication means.  I interpreted "changing the load"  as being a change in current which would be like a 4-20ma network or RS485, but I could be wrong.  Anyway, that change would have to be received by the other side and would have to be stored in order to perform startup, regulation and shutdown.

Good luck though with your idea, may it bring you millions!

  • Is it possible to use the wireless power technology to transmit user data?---Yes the WPC standard does have optional provisions for customer data to be transferred from the  RX to TX.

Are there Parts available at this time which can be used like that? – TI devices doe not support this option.

Note the WPC communications path is one way from RX to TX.  The RX will send data to the TX using load modulation.  No data will be sent from TX to RX.

  • Is there any update of the WPC for both power and data transmission? I want to use wireless power transmission to power wireless sensor nodes, at the same time to receive the data from the sensor node by using the same system.
If not, do you have any other suggestions for above applications?
    Thank you!
