BQ24040 Short Circuit Protection of IN pin

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24040

I am designing the BQ24040 into a product that will have the charging pins (IN and Vss) exposed.  The product can be submerged under water (fresh, salt, or pool water) as part of its use case.  Is it required to short circuit protect the pins and how do you recommend adding that protection?

  • Hello Michael,

Short circuit protection on the input is generally done at the source.  You would provide short circuit protection such as fuses, breakers or current limiters to the output of whatever supply (battery, generator, solar, etc) you are using to feed the charger.

You can add transient suppressor to the input pins in order to protect the device from voltage spikes.  You can also add diodes to protect against reversal of leads and clamp the input voltage Vin max.

    Thanks,
