bq78PL114 and LiFePO4

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL114, BQ78PL116

We designed 2 years ago a LiFePO4 battery pack (10Ah/3.2V/12 cell). We did several third party tests (CE, FCC, UL, UN tests) on it and got the correct approvals.

However, under some occasions we noticed that the SOC indication failed when we were using the battery pack.

We did already some optimizations (with help from TI), but the SOC still fails in some cases: calculated rem cap values of 220Ah for an individual cell (real value = 10Ah). In those cases the RSOC makes the strangest jumps (from 100% till 0% within a second).

My questions:

- Will it be possible to tweak the settings so RSOC will work correctly for this battery pack?

- What accuracy of RSOC can we expect with the bq78PL114?

- Does TI offer a (paid) service to optimize the bq78PL114 for our battery pack?

We must find a solution urgently. Hope to get an answer soon!

Thank you.

  • Hi Wim,

Thanks for your message. The issues you're facing sound like ones we've recently addressed with an update to the bq78PL116 base code, called bq78PL116-R1. Please get in touch with Tom Cosby to discuss how best to migrate your solution to this version, as PL114 development was discontinued several years ago.

    Regards,

    Allen

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your help.

Which accuracy can we expect for RSOC if we migrate our battery pack to the bq78PL116?

In case of insufficient accuracy, does TI offer (paid) services to optimize the bq78PL116 for our application?

    Best regards,

    Wim

  • Hello Allen,

We are here in France, using BQ 114 since 2009, and have now migrate successfully to BQ116

We are using Chem file 405 (LiFePO4) and generate few .aux but still we have to face some inconsistencyy with RSOC

This mean that we are interesting in what you call 116-R1...

    Is it a new firmware?

    Where can we get it?

    Best regards

    Robert

  • Hello Robert,

You said that you successfully migrated to bq116, but still face some inconsistency with RSOC. Which accuracy for RSOC do you get with the upgrade to the bq116?

At the moment we use the bq114, but after struggling more than a year we are at a point to  redesign it with a chipset from another manufacturer.

Your information will be helpful for us to make the decision if an upgrade to the bq116 would resolve any of the existing issues.

    Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Wim
