Problems accessing the BQ34Z110EVM Module RAM even with FAS and SS bits cleared??

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z110

Hi,

I am having problems with a BQ34Z110EVM Module.

I am accessing the module using the bq Evaluation software version 0.9.90. I have followed the instructions on page 29 and 30 of the bq34z110 datasheet (SLUSB55A) datasheet. I have run a battery through 2 cycles of charge - discharge as recommended.

However the last instruction on the datasheet states: "Restore the Cell BL Set Volt Threshold to the desired value". However when I tried to do this the Data Flash location could not be written to. It just gets highlighted in red. I tried all the other data flash locations that were previously accessible and they are also locked. The FAS and SS bits are cleared in the Control Status register. I sent the RESET command 0x4100 and this reset the device including setting the FAS and SS bits. I successfully cleared these bits by sending 0x1404 and 0x7236 to clear the SS bit and 0xFFFF followed by 0xFFFF to clear the FAS bit. However the FLASH locations are still locked. I cannot calibrate the device either as the calibration data cannot be written. It just returns an error message. The current state of the control register is shown on the JPEG attached Can you please explain how I can get access to the Data Flash??

Also after clearing the FAS and SS bits of the Control Status register if I contnue to keep scanning these bits show as being cleared. However if I disconnect the BQ34Z110EVM Module from the battery and allow it to power down and then reconnect it and power it up the software shows the FAS and SS bits as being set. My gut feeling is that they are set internally in the chip and are never cleared but the software shows them as being cleared. This is a deeply frustrating problem so any help to resolve it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards David Brown.

  • David,

The bq34z1xx devices limit some changes to data flash parameters after the IT Enable command has been sent. You will need to reload the default senc file, ChemID and your gg file to change these parameters. You can extract the gg file and change the Cycle Count to 0 and Update Status to 00. (I assume that you have not completed the learning process. If you have completed the learning process, then set the Update Status to 02.) You should make your data flash changes and calibrate the device before you send the IT Enable command.

  • Hi Tom,

Where do I find the default senc file??

I noticed that when I unzipped the BQ evaluation software it contained a SENC files folder but it was empty.

I have extracted the .GG file and presumably I can just open the file and change the "Cycle Count" and "Update Status" using wordpad.

    Thanks

I attached the senc file. I use Notepad to edit the gg file, but Wordpad should work.
