LiPo multicell battery charger design

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24170, BQ24620

I want to build a battery charger/management circuit for 3-cells Li polymer battery (3.7V each, 11.1V total). The battery pack comes with a pre-built protection control module (PCM). The battery should be charged with 15V adapter. When adapter is connected, adapter should charge the battery as well as drive another system (load). When the adapter is not connected, the battery should power the load. The battery pack is external, so there is no communication interface with system (load).

My Questions:

1. Which components do I need to make a battery management circuit for my application? (Battery charger IC, Gas gauge IC, Protection AFE, Battery Pack Manager). It seems like battery charger IC like bq24170 can charge and select power (adapter or battery) to the system, but no cell balancing.

2. Do I need another protection circuit (Protection AFE) even though my battery has a PCM?

3. If the input voltage (from the adapter) varies by around 2-3V, will it affect the battery management circuit? Do I need a voltage regulator before the battery charger?

4.  Any recommendation for the components?

  • look at the bq24620.

The converter is a buck converter and needs a small amount of head room--> greater than 1V should be good 12.6V+1V = 13.6V.

The converter can use an input up to its rating minus any ringing and transients.

You will need to post in the Gas Gauge forum to get answers on cell balancing.

  • I have a similar project. I am looking to build a battery recharge circuit for a 3s Lipo 60C 5800mAh. Were you able to successfully build a charging circuit for your LiPo? If so, can you share any resources or pointers?

    Thanks,
