Reverse Li-Ion battery detection

Hello,

I have a cylindrical Li-ion battery that can be erroneously installed in reverse.

If I use a FET in the power path to protect the circuit, would the battery still be able to charge when installed the correct way?

To protect the charger IC from a reverse connection in the battery one would have to put the FET in series with the battery and have a circuit that would turn off the FET if reversed baised. This should work fine.

Thank you for your prompt answer. Would the FET, when turned on (battery installed properly) still allow the battery to be charged?

I am thinking to use a PFET as suggested in http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva139/slva139.pdf

Yes, when source of the P-CH is connected to the battery and the Drain is connected to the output of the charger and when the FET is on, it should only add 10s of milliohms to the battery impedance and charge correctly.
