PTN04050A - Layout Guidelines

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTN04050A

Customer (Niitek) is looking for more documentation (App Note or White Paper) on additional Layout guidance beyond the data sheet.  I checked ESP and did a search on E2E but didn't find anything.

Issue/History - This device has been used for years and tolerances were tight.  Per customer - A year or so ago they received PTN04050A devices that forced them to change the resistor value to keep in spec.  This year they have to change the Resister value back to the original based on new parts coming in.  Niitek doesn't want to have to change out the Resistor on an order by order basis and are looking to see if there is additional layout guidance.

Note that when this happened before they did trouble shoot with TI and verified the polarity of the devices around the PTN04050A device.

Thanks,

Dan

  • Hi Dan,

Not sure what guidance they might be looking for.  If they are using the SMT version, there is an App Note on this: http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/slyt212 .

Can you expand upon the resistor situation (is this RSET you are referring to?).  There is a note for layout of RSET that it should be placed directly (as close to) pins 1 and 4 as possible (see datatsheet page 7 Fig 15.  Also see page 14 discussion about the PI-Filter capacitors, again, as close to the pins as possible, and see the notes on the capacitor ESR requirements.

  • Hi Leonard:

The application listed was released only to explain at that time, over (8) years ago,  the solder ball design .

1.The Reset pin ( voltage adjustment ) main requirement to place it between pin 4 and pin 1.It should be a 1% 100ppm/°C type for temperature stability. .

    2. The PI filter used to attenuate ripple and noise for best performance should be located close to the power module.  The typical attenuation using this filter is 10-15db.
