PTH08T220 - heating up

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTH08T220W

Hi,

The PTH module on our board is providing around 5A @ 5V to the loads. Though this is well within 16A limit of the module, we are seeing excessive heat generated on the module. The module is nearly untouchable because of heat. Is it normal case or is there any problem on our side?

  • PTH08T220W  with 12Vin and 5Vout  at 5Amp load  average  power  components with no air flow, natural convection, temperatures are: when soldered directly to  a 100mmx100 mm  with double sided 2 ounce copper surface in ambient temperature of 23-25°C

Power FETS atop the  PCB, PCB= 62°C to 63°C case

Power Inductor is 78°C -80°C top ferrite core.

This is the normal  temperatures for this output voltage.

The thermal data (SOA ) is published in the product specification.
