BQ24210 IN Parallel

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24210, BQ24072, BQ24073

1a) Hi, what happens if I connect more than one bq24210 chip in parallel to potentially increase current output?

b)If the battery is removed, and is connected still to its parallel load as well as a supply source (voltage on Vbus pin), what happens to the voltage at the output terminals??

  • Although we have not tested this in the lab, paralleling two bq24210 should not damage the ICs.  At low battery voltages, both chargers will supply charging current but as the battery voltage nears regulation (or when no battery is connected), the charger with the higher internal reference voltage will shut off, leaving only one charger operating.

  • Thanks for the first answer..

In the case that the battery is disconnected, but there is a voltage input from my solar cells.

a)Will the bq24210 be able to regulate the voltage to the external circuitry (4.2V) without shutting itself off? I plan on using the bq24210 in tracking mode ie with VDPM open or would I need to set the programming resistor to the required output voltage?

  • With your external circuitry circuitry connected to BAT and trying to draw current but no battery at BAT, the IC's battery detection circuitry will think there is a shorted battery and turn itself off.

You need a charger with power path, such as the bq24072 or bq24073 family.  That family has VINDPM, just like the bq24210, which can be set to 80% of the solar panels open circuit voltage for maximum power point tracking.

  • Thank you Jeff. That is exactly what I needed.
