BQ27531 with BQ24190 default charge current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24190, BQ24192, BQ2012

Considering a BQ27513/BQ24190 design with default gas-guage flash configuration, I want to know what the default charge behavior would be. On its own, the BQ24190 would automatically charge the battery at a current of 2A which exceeds the charging limit of the battery I would like to use. However, from the early (April 2013) BQ27531 Technical Reference Manual it looks like the gas-guage would change this default to disable charging and to set the default charge current to 0. Is this correct?

  • If using default gauge parameters, the charger would use whatever it's defaults are and charge at that rate. The default settings in the gauge require a charging start command in order for the gauge to take control of the charger. This can be changed setting the CMD_NOT_REQ bit in the Charger Options register. Also, the gauge is preconfigured to work with the bq24192 charger. To make it work with the bq24190, the Product Number register needs to be changed to 32. I've attached a TRM draft that has a lot more detail about the device operation.

  • We are using NiMH battery charger IC BQ2012. We added resistors to select a PFC Value =320mVh. Will this work for both 2300mAh & 2450mAHh battery packs (sense resistor is 0.2 ohms)?
