TLV62090 output capacitance

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV62090

Team,

My customer has the following question:

"The TLV62090 datasheet states that it "tolerates output capacitors ranging from 10uF up to 150uF and beyond." This is confusing. Is it "up to" or "beyond"? I am unsure why the datasheet would state "up to" if there isn't a limit. I would like to know if there is an output capacitance limit and if so what is it. I would like to use a 330uF output capacitor on this regulator. Thanks!"

  • There may be a theoretical limit for the Cout for DCS-Control but in practice, very large output caps almost always have some finite and significant amount of ESR.  ESR helps stability by adding a zero into the control loop.

We say 'up to' to show what is used for the most common applications and what we have tested.  We have to stop testing things at some point and this point is 150uF for this device.  It certainly might support more but the customer should measure the stability through a bode plot (SLVA465) and load step (SLVA381) to verify their design.
