EV2400 / EV2300 compatibility and pricing

I have seen quite a few posts here on the forums regarding compatibility issues between the EV2300 and different OS versions (Windows XP, 7, 8, 32 bit, 64 bit, etc). It seems as though the EV2400 is newer and thus works "out-of-the-box" with more operating systems.

I would like some clarification about the following:
1) What OS versions is the EV2300 *actually* compatible with as of this time? My main OS is 64 bit Windows 7 and it would be nice if the EV was compatible with that OS. However, I have an older computer using Windows XP that I could set up for use with the EV2300 if that is the only compatible OS version (although I'd much prefer to not need to do this).

2) What are the differences between the EV2300 and EV2400? I am planning on using it with the BQ27531EVM, which seems to be compatible with both EVs. Do I need the EV2400 or would the EV2300 suffice?

3) The EV2400 was $49 as listed on its product detail page a few weeks ago. Now, however, the price has jumped to $200. The various distributors (Digikey, Mouser, etc) also showed this phenomenon of 400% price increase recently. What difference from the EV2300 makes it twice as expensive? Why the huge price jump?

  • I myself don't have the EV2300 but I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can.

    1) Official driver support is for Windows XP to 7, 32 bit. An unofficial 64-bit version is available at http://e2e.ti.com/support/power_management/battery_management/m/videos__files/458983.aspx but because I don't own the EV2300, I can't provide any personal insight into the driver's efficacy.

    2) The EV2300 and EV2400 are both compatible with the bqEVSW and GaugeStudio software, and the bq27531 is compatible with GaugeStudio on both the EV2300 and EV2400; the EV2400 will require an additional install for bqEVSW compatibility (for other devices that GaugeStudio doesn't support), available at http://www.ti.com/litv/zip/sluc291

    The difference between the EV2300 and EV2400, from the technical side, is in how the device is built internally. The EV2300 is a multi-chip device with proprietary USB protocols to transfer data; the EV2400 has a single MSP430 microcontroller that uses the standard USB Human Interface Device protocol to handle data.

    3) I think only TI can provide the answer to the EV2400's super-high price jump. A lot of other gas gauge EVMs are much higher priced as well. However, at https://estore.ti.com/EV2400-USB-Based-PC-Interface-Board-for-Battery-Fuel-Gas-Gauge-Evaluation-Module-P2575.aspx the price is still listed as $50, and preliminary testing in the shopping cart seems to support that you can still buy it for $50.

  • Thank you very much for your answers. For whatever reason, TI has changed the price back to $49 for the EV2400. It was $199 in the cart earlier the same day I posted my original questions. I've now ordered it and thus will hopefully not need to use the EV2300. I greatly appreciate TI reducing their price to what it was originally.
