Lead acid battery charging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650, SM72441, BQ24450, BQ2031

Dear TI,

I am interested in charging lead acid batteries 24V, from solar panel. I have read your most app notes and datasheets on your BQ2031, SM72441, U3909, BQ24650, BQ24450 and now I am confused.

Which one of above, or any other IC would be the best for 24v lead acid battery charging and do you have any eval kits to test a setup? The solar panel has open ckt voltage ~34 to 38 V. An MPPT charger would be preferred if the algorithm is implemented in the IC (no external uC)

Thanks,

Inam

  • We do not really have something that fits all of your requirements so any solution will require external components to adapt the design to the IC.  The voltage is higher than we typically design our ICs to work with.  The bq2031 is a lead acid charger so this would be best for using a algorithm for charging, but does not have any MPPT circuit.

The bq24650 has a fixed MPP setting for one optimal setting, which is may be adjustable with an external thermistor, but the high voltage would have to be isolated from the IC, which is always complicated.
