TLV1117LV series Reverse Current Protection

Hello,

I think that TLV1117LV series doesn't have the Reverse Current Protection function.
If there is possibility Vout>Vin,  should we add the reverse current protection diode between Vin and Vout?

Best Regards,
Ryuji Asaka
  • Hi Ryuji,

You are correct that we do not have the reverse current protection functionality on this family of parts; however, due to the PMOS pass element we are afforded some protection due to the body diode.  We describe it on pg 10 of the datasheet:

The PMOS pass element in the TLV1117LV device has a built-in body diode that conducts current when the
voltage at OUT exceeds the voltage at IN. This current is not limited; if extended reverse voltage operation is
anticipated, external limiting to 5% of the rated output current is recommended.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan

  • Hello Ryan san,

    Thank you for the reply.

Could you please kindly let me know the example of external limiting circuit ?
For example,   Diode between Vout(Anode)  and Vin(Cathode) ?
             Or , Diode between Vout(Anode)  and the Load(Cathode) ?

    Best Regards,
    Ryuji Asaka
  • Hi Ryuji-san,

A diode between Vout and Vin is what is recommended.

    Very Respectfully,

    Ryan
