LP2981 overcurrent recovery

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP2981, LP2951

We have an application where a smart card needs to be powered. The 100mA of the LP2981 is just right. However, when the user removes the smart card there is a large chance of shorting the VDD pin of the smart card (i.e. output of the LDO) to GND.

We need to know if the LP2981 is a good fit for current limiting this short current in the 100-200mA range, and whether the LP2981 will quickly and reliably recover its output voltage after a short. The input voltage to the LDO comes from a regulator which will not be affected by a current limited short.

Best regards,

Borge

  • Borge,

The LP2981 current limit is typically 400mA and will vary device to device.

The LP2951 is also a 100mA regulator and the current limit is 220mA or less.
As long as the short is temporary where die temperature will not active over temperature limit, then it will recover from the short quickly.
