Regarding RTC battery backup @TM4C123BE6PZ

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TM4C123BE6PZ

Hi,

We chose the subject part number for our project. I would like to know the interface between Battery and Vbat pin. In a datasheet there was direct interface between Battery and Vbat pin with one Resistor Capacitor circuit. Is there any inbuilt circuit protection in subject part number when the battery is reversed. If there is no internal circuitry, could you please suggest us the external protection circuitry for battery interface.

In Hilbernate state, the RTC gets the supply from Battery. But, when power is up RTC gets the supply from supply voltage VDD while no consumption in battery life. Please clarify me on this.

Soonest response would be appreciated!!!

Thank you,

Ramachandra

  • Hello Ramachandra,

Looking through your post and your subject line there is no battery charger part number listed. Which part are you considering?

Looking at the Tiva part that you are considering (TM4C123BE6PZ) the Vbat pin looks like it is simply an under voltage protection subsystem if a battery is connected. The schematic that you are referring to appears to be on Pg. 491. Looking at the schematic the capacitor and the resistor most likely serve the purpose of making sure that if the battery voltage droops due to the load that the Tiva does not hibernate prematurely from the voltage droop but only enter hibernation when the steady state battery voltage has fallen too far.

Regarding reverse voltage protection I would recommend looking at the application note here:
