TPS40210-HT DC-DC converter 700V to 48V

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40210, TPS40210-HTI have a future project that requires a high temperature DC-DC converter and I was considering using the TPS40210-HT as the controller. See preliminary requirements below: Pout (W): 29W Vout (V) : 48V Iout (A) : 0.6A Vin (V) : 60V-700V No. of outputs: single operating temperature: 175C efficiency spec: Not yet defined I have seen reference designs using the TPS40210-HT operating with an input voltage of up to 200V in both SEPIC (PMP5143) and Flyback (PMP2657) configurations. With an external gate driver circuit, is conceivable that the TPS40210 could be used to switch voltages as high as 700V?
  • Hi Johnathan,

With an external gate driver it should work. The challenge of switching this much voltage is the FET required. A FET rated to handle the 700V (higher rating needed to account for ringing and overshoot) could take a lot of current to turn on and turn off quick enough to limit switching losses and have low enough Rds(on) to limit conduction losses. The external gate driver will increase gate drive current to decrease the turn on and turn off time of the FET reducing switching losses.

    Best Regards,
    Anthony

  • Is it possible to consider this PWM IC for two Switch Forward Converter ? If not , Why ? Actually I don't understand why this PWM IC is suitable for Flyback and not Forward ?
