LM317AEMP - output capacitor

Hello,

I read page-19 of the data sheet  of LM317AEMP about an output capacitor.

"A 1μF solid tantalum (or 25μF aluminum electrolytic) on the output swamps this effect and insures stability."

Is the ceramic capacitor non-recommended?

Regards,

Daisuke

  • In most instances use of ceramic for Cout may be acceptable, but there may be some ringing in the output voltage with fast load current steps.

I strongly recommend that you confirm behavior with ceramic Cout in your specific application is acceptable.

Otherwise, adding a low value resistor in series with ceramic capacitor to simulate some ESR would work.

Beyond that, any aluminum or tantalum capacitor.
