Using bq34z110 with an inverter with out opening the inverter.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z110

Hi all,

I want to use BQ34z110 for monitoring the Lead Acid battery connected with Home inverter with out opening the inverter. can I use it for that ,how should i connect the BQ34z110 to the battery and inverter. What will be the effect of sense resistor already present in the inverter.

regards,

Sadatan

  • Sadatan,

You should be able to connect the device to your inverter using these connections.

BAT+     Connect to the positive battery terminal.

BAT-      Connect to the negative battery terminal.

PACK-   Connect to the negative contact of your charger or load.

Connect the positive side of your charger or load to BAT+.

This circuit will have two sense resistors. The one in the inverter and the one used by the bq34z110.

    I hope that this helps.

  • Thanks TOM.

Can you please tell how, connecting two sense resistors in series will effect the results of the fuel gauge(capacity, current ,voltage etc).

    regards,

    Sadatan

  • Sadatan,

I do not see why an extra sense resistor should cause a problem. The device will measure current and capacity based on the voltage across its sense resistor.

  • Thanks Tom.

I am  only worried about the current limiting by the internal sense resistor of inverter and the voltage drop across it, because if the current flowing through the sense resistor is say 60amp there may be a significant drop across the internal resistor as well which may cause the difference in the readings.

    regards,

    Sadatan

  • Sadatan,

The voltage drop across the internal sense resistor could be detected and it may cause a problem, but we do not have much choice without opening the housing to get access to the internal hardware.
