On the example on page 25 of the datasheet, I am trying to follow the calculation of RT2 but come up with a negative number ... is there an error in the equation ?

No, you just ran out of temperature range. As one narrows the operation window RT2 gets larger. At a certain point it turns negative and that implies you need a negative resistor or so source curent instead of sinking it.
If you want that lower high temperature setting then you have to sacrifice the lower temp threshold.
