LP2985 regulator

I am planning to use LP2985 as a  5v regulator.. As per the datasheet the input voltage can range from 2v-16v, for which the output voltage is 5v.

when the input to the regulator is 10v, will be excess 5v be dissipated as heat like the other linear regulators.

kindly clarify the above so i can proceed with the design.

    Kaushik,

    The device temperature (Tj) per the data sheet will be based on this formula.
    Tj = Ta + 206C/W * (VIN-5V) * IOUT
    Therefore the temperature also depends on ambient temperature and output current.

    I must also mention that output voltage will be less than 5V when input voltage is less than 5V.
