LM3671MF-3.3 Output Current Limit

I am using the LM3671MF-3.3 in an experimenter kit.  The end customer can easly short out the 3.3V rail. It is critical that a short does not result in damage to the system.

What happens if the user draws between 600mA and 1A (prior to overload detection)?  Will the power remain stable.  Will this damage the LM3671?

  • LM3671 will try to regulate normally until the current limit is reached.  You will need to pay close attention to thermal performance and board layout to dissipate the additional power in that case.

    Think I understand what you mean, but may be some inaccuracy in your description.  If user will be drawing > 600mA eventually it will hit current limit.  This is not a precise detection, which may come as low as 800mA or as high as 1.1A dependents on process corner and operation conditions.  During overloading, the timed current limit (cyclebycycle pk current scheme) causes the current to ramp up and dowm dissipating the inductor energy preventing runaway condition that cause device damage. The output can remain faily stable albeit voltage decreases as the current drawn increases.  The output ripple will also be large due to the current undulation. It should be reminded that if such condition persists in the application as you suggest, this stressful condition could shorten the life span of any device used.    Furthermore if the die temperature rises aggressived due to combination of high ambient temperation and power dissipation (low efficiency other op conditions) it may trigger TSD which can shut down the output until device is cool below the hysteresis threshold.  Hope this helps.  Kern
