Hello All,

I want to design a medical back-lit panel. 

A medical product contains a back-lit panel.  The panel lighting is an array of 9 sets of LED’s.  These LED’s are arranged in three strings of 3 RGB LED’s as shown below:

 

The situation and requirements are:

1)      A 6.0V power supply is available

2)      The color of the backlight panel must be changeable to any arbitrary RGB combination via a serial communications interface (I2C, SPI or UART are all acceptable)

3)      All three LED chains will always be lit the same color and the same brightness at any given time

Can you provide some insights as to which modules can be used in the design?

    Hello Ajay,

    What are the forward diode voltages of the LED strings for the different colors?
    What sort of current do you want this to run at?

    Looking at the information that you have provided you will most likely need a boosting module if the only rail that you have is 6V.

    While it is not out yet it is in preview it looks like the LP8555 would fit this application. While it would have a few unused channels it provides a solution that can handle the Vin that you are providing and boost up the voltage to handle LEDs configured in series.

    It also has an I2C interface for control.

    I would like to run this at around 15 ma and .. with one concern related to the forward voltage of blue and green which is around 3.4 V which needs atleast 32V boost at the output.
