bq24753ARHDT ESD Protection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24753A

On a good board BAT(PIN 17 of bq24753A) has a resistance to ground of about 219 KOhms.  On a failed board the resistance is about 72 Ohms.  One of the failed chips had charring on the top in a location near pin 17.

I think ESD or an inductive spike is the culprit.  What is TI’s advice for hardening the circuit?

  • Hello Brannon,

If you think the culprit is ESD or EOS from some sort of transient I would recommend looking at the material that TI has for handling voltage transients and ESD on a system level. While the BQ24753A has some internal ESD it is limited and it sounds like for you application that incorporating some additional system level ESD in the in the form of TVS or other solutions is called for.
