TPS65217 other Battery options?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65217

Could a super cap be used as a hold up for graceful shutdown of the system?

Could alternate chemistry batteries  be used maybe 3 NiCd cells?

I would hate to have to add another subsystem if this PMIC could be adapted to meet the need.

Another question maybe if there is a lithium chemistry that could work in -20C ok.

Thanks

  • Josh,

If using a supercap to hold up the AC or USB pins, please be aware that it may cause issues as rise time of less than 50ms is required for those rails.

The charger in TPS65217 is designed for Li+ battery chemistry and is not recommended for any other chemistry.

  • I plan on using the super cap on the BAT terminal to ensure a safe power down when AC is removed.

It is charging 50F at a really slow rate is this due to the charger thinking it is a dead battery?

Could I tie the Bat Sense to a summing junction to have greater than ~2.25V so i can move to quick charging the caps sooner?

I am investigating now and will post results of my limited testing.

  • A note on using a 10k to be the Thermistor the PMIC will not start if the capacitor is not connected when the resistor is connected.  I thought the datasheet read such that it would attempt to see if battery is present by using up to 7mA and measure the voltage, if the resistor is connected it Bat voltage goes to the VAC. With no resistor is does not?
