The full scale input range to SRC is limited to ±250 mV, so a 500 mohm sense resistor will limit your charge and discharge currents to less than 500mA. Is this going to be practical for your application?

And yes, currently my system does charge the battery pack at 500mA. The smart charging IC that I am using provides a 250mV sense voltage.

I also had another question, in order to utilize this IC, do I have to initialize the IC by communicating, or can I short the RBI pin to ground to perform a reset.

I am not sure what you are referring to with "utilizing this IC", but you can initialize it by removing voltage from VCC and shorting the RBI capacitor.

You should be able to use the device standalone, but you should place a pull-up on the HDQ pin so that the device does not think that it is being polled.

You could try a 10 kohm pull-up resistor to Vcc.
