Looking for suitable Li ion Poly battery charger IC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24250

Hi!

I am looking for a charger IC for charging 5v, 2900mAH Li ion Polymer battery. The current consumption for the device is estimated to be around 1500mA. I am not aware of parameters like charging current etc. So does charging current has anything to do with current rating of the battery? I have chosen bq24250 IC which looks little complex. I would be grateful if anyone can guide me to select best IC !

Thank You

Minhaj

  • Hello Minhaj,

Your charging rate is typically a function of the battery capacity. In this case to charge a a rate of 1C would be to charge at 2.9A. Charging at a rate faster than this will reduce the life of the battery.

The fact that your system current consumption is 1.5A and that the device you selected is a 2A power path charge looks like it would be a reasonable fit for your application.

I would recommend looking at some of the selection guides for Lithium-ion batteries to help guide your selection.

I would also recommend versing yourself on the idiosyncrasies of charging and using Lithium-ion batteries. here is a great reference that I would recommend reading.

Using the information that you learn from these links will help to guide you to understanding the key parameters for selecting the best BMS devices.

Let me know when you have quesitons.
