BQ27410 Cycle counter

Hi,

I'm using the BQ27410 Fuel Gauge in my design, and now I'm going a bit deeper into designing.

My question is I have been using the Fuel Gauge for some time now, but I haven't been able to get the Cycle Couter value out of the Data Flash. Is this value not updating - if so what is the purpose of this value?

Thanks,

Kind regards,
Soren

  • Hello Soren,

I am not sure why you have not been able to get the cycle count out the data flash block. It looks like it should be as simple as sending the extended command requesting a dump of the data flash block discussed on Pg. 13 of the datasheet and then you would just have to parse through the information to get the cycle count.

The purpose of the cycle count within the device is that it is used to tracking the aging of the battery to maintain accurate tracking. With every cycle the interior of the cell changes and adjusts the internal impedance of the cell and also the capacity. While this might not be that drastic from cycle to cycle over the several hundred cycle life of the battery the influence is drastic and without proper tracking it could introduce double digit percentage errors in the gauging.
