PTH powersupply for VIRTEX7 MGTAVCC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTH08T220W

Hallo,

i have to design a powersupply for a VIRTEX7 MGTAVCC 1.0V

The VIRTEX Power Estimator give me a result of 13A for our design.

In the XILINX datasheet the Ripple of the MGTAVCC must less then 10mVpp.

The railvoltage is 12V for the input of the powermodul.

I found the PTH08T220W with 16A, 4.5V to 14 Input. So i want to use TurboTrack and if it is necessary smartsync at 240KHz. The T2 Capacitance Calculator give me a result for Type B capacitors Rtt 0 and 2382uF. What is the ESR for this capacitors ans how high will then the output ripple.

Is it possible to get a design 1.0V/13A with less then 10mVpp ripple with this power module?

Thanks

  • Bruno:

PTH08T220W with each output capacitor ESR is to be <15mΩ  and (turbo trans) RTT=(0Ω), the  transient response is 12mV. There are numerous low voltage , polymer /polymer aluminum capacitors available  5-7 mΩ range ,and up to  1000uF capacitors available at  3V-4V.

The average output  ripple is 10-14mV without addition output ceramic capacitors. Adding  larger output ceramic capacitance wil attenuate ripple by about  20-40%, The 47uF x4 and or 100ufx2 or more ceramic capacitors  are available at 6.3V rating in a 1210 package.

  • Hallo Tom,

    thanks for your fast answer.

What is with smartsync for the 12V input voltage?

  • Bruno:

The smart sync. consideration is when Vout  x11=Vin maximu. The smart sync data  page 27 specification, shows at 12V switching frequency 300kHz may increase the average output ripple  2 times. The data shows at about  1.08V,vin=12V  which meets the ripple specification of 12-14mVat 11Amp load. To Insure Vin to Vout ,would require 240kHz oscillator on the smart sync. pin.
