BQ24703 Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

To preface my questions, here is my understanding of a charge controller. You have a battery pack and some kind of ac power source and basically, the charge controller will either connect the ac power source or the charge controller to the load based upon which source is providing more power.

  1. The sources in question are solar cells and 3 lithium ion battery pack. I want to make sure that solar cells will work with this chip.
  2. I want to make sure that my understanding of the pins are correct.
    1. The ACDET pin will reference the ACPRES pin and if it is higher than the AC power source will be connected to the load, if it is not than the battery will be connected to the load.
    2. I'm a little lost on the correlation of ACP, ACN and ACSET.  Here is my understanding, in equation (3) on page 19, IADPT sets a current limit flowing into the load if the ac power source is connected, then equation (3) is used to set the VACSET pin at the correlated voltage.  Then using using equation (2) on page 7, the voltage at which ACP and ACN are decided to choose cdelta and thus the accuracy.  What is the value of mdelta
    3. From my understanding the ACPRES is a relatively simple pin if the AC adapter was a relatively constant voltage, where the voltage would be set with a pull-up resistor dependent on whatever voltage we would want to cut the battery off.  However, since we are using solar cells, and still want to be able to connect the source that will give the most power to the load, the voltage on the "AC adapter" will be constantly changing.  Is it possible with external circuitry to dynamically change this pin dependent on the current battery voltage?

As of now those are my questions, but I will have more depending on the answers to the above questions.

Thank you for your time and help

  • If you are using a solar panel as an input, I would look at the bq24650.

The main feature needed for solar panels is Maxium Power Point Tracking.  This loads the solar cell down to the programmed threshold where the maximum power output of the solar panel occurs and regulates there.

  • The Maximum Power Point Tracking actually isn't an issue, as we have designed our own.  Also the other issue with the three chips under energy harvesting & solar charging is that we need packages with leads.
